A view from the bridge5/27/2023 ![]() This history begins in the 1920s when the United States passed a law that drastically limited the number of immigrants who could enter the United States from Italy (and elsewhere). ![]() Over the next 15 years, as is clear from many drafts of the story in the Ransom Center collection, Miller, Norman Rosten (who wrote the screenplay), and Lumet, shifted the emphasis to downplay the history of illegal Italian immigration. Miller’s original inspiration for his “Italian tragedy” was the immediate post-WWII context, when he was immersed in the labor conflicts on the Brooklyn waterfront and made a trip to Italy to visit the families of Brooklyn longshoremen. ![]() Critics of the film, and of the play by Arthur Miller on which it is based, have generally paid scant attention to the representation of migration in the story and as a result have often found the characters’ motives hard to read. ![]() A View from the Bridge is the story of an Italian American longshoreman named Eddie who informs on two of his wife’s relatives, illegal immigrants Marco and Rodolpho, in order to prevent Rodolpho from marrying his niece, Catherine. ![]()

Bareface cs lewis5/27/2023 ![]() Rubio Slager enjoyed the process of repurposing products for the stage. The set design for “BareFace” consists of almost all recycled materials, emphasizing the importance of caring for the environment. ![]() Still, the characters grapple with the same problems that we see in our daily lives today. ![]() In this imaginary scenario, nature has started to fight back, giving audiences a new way to view the issue. It stormed into the book community last year and everyone’s been raving about it I’ve been desperate to read it whilst simultaneously worrying it won’t live up to the noise.Ĭlay Cooper and his band were once the best of the best - the meanest, dirtiest, most feared crew of mercenaries this side of the Heartwyld. Day Soldiers by Brandon Hale5/26/2023 ![]() Moundsville town historian Gary Rider hadn’t either, but he found and emailed me genealogical research indicating that newspaper accounts exaggerated her age and number of children. I never heard her story while researching material for our movie. ![]() Her likeness hung in the National Portrait Gallery in Washington, and the Ohio state gallery in Columbus. (14 for the Union, two for the Confederacy.) It also mentioned this fact: “She drank and smoked moderately for 90 years.”īrandon’s life story shows how early media legends were created, and illustrates in vivid detail the tough, painful lot of women in 19th century America.Ī search of newspaper archives shows that Brandon was a minor media sensation in the 1900s and 1910s. ![]() According to a story in the Cedar Rapids, Iowa Gazette, she died at 113, and had 23 children, including 16 boys who fought in the Civil War. Velvet glove cast in iron5/26/2023 ![]() ![]() Loudermilk moves though his bizarre world in a distinctly uncomfortable yet strangely accepting manner, though he rarely interacts with it unless it forces itself upon him. ![]() ![]() Some fire is clearly rekindled and he sets off on a quest to find her. From his reaction to the movie and the flashbacks we’re a party to, it’s clear that he’s had a close relationship with the actress but has somehow lost touch with her. The story is a bizarre road trip, following surprisingly normal Clay Loudermilk on a quest to find a woman he’s seen in a pornographic film. Teamed up with his stylish black and white artwork, oozing 50s B-movie sleaze, Like a Velvet Glove Cast in Iron is a portrait of a world that’s dark and messed up. Clowes’ America is a surreal and brutal place, where deformity and psychosis are the norm. ![]() |
